Tips for keeping your child safe in the car

Child safety in the car is paramount; children are most vulnerable in the event of an accident, so it is important to ensure you take all necessary safety precautions to keep them safe.

Child Car Safety Tips

At Cartronics 2U we have a few tips for keeping your little VIP’s safe in the car.

  • Buying a good quality car seat that complies with Australian standards is the first step to keeping your child safe. Look for the Australian Standards sticker that states AS/NZS 1754. You’ll be glad to know we have some of the strictest rules in the world when it comes to child car seat safety.
  • It is important that from birth to six months that your child is in a rear-facing car seat. Research has shown that the longer you leave your child rear facing, the better. Rear-facing seats better support the head and neck of the child. When deciding whether to turn your child to a forward-facing seat it is more important to look at their height than their weight and age. Your child’s shoulders should comfortably sit in between the markers on the car seat.
  • Up until the age of four your child must be in an approved rear or forward-facing child seat.
  • From the age of four until seven a booster seat with an inbuilt harness, or an adult lap belt must be used.
  • Once your child is 145 cm, they may use an adult’s seatbelt; however, the longer you leave a child in a car seat the better, so don’t be in any rush to move them out of their child seat.
  • Always keep an eye on the car seat’s expiry date, and never use a car seat that has been in a car accident.
  • Always look at the guidelines to see what size chair is required for your child, and ensure you go by your child’s weight and not size.
  • Getting your car seat professionally installed is the best way to ensure it’s safe.
